2013 Delta Sauvignon Blanc

2013 Delta Sauvignon Blanc

Classic Marlborough flavours and varietal definition. Intense aromas of white currants, black-currants, and ripe tropical notes including passionfruit.

Vineyard

Matt Thomson, one of Marlborough's busiest winemaking consultants, has found that the area around Dillons Point produces the most intense flavours in Sauvignon Blanc. In 2001 he and his family found a 25 acre site in this sub-region and planted it exclusively in Sauvignon Blanc. 70% is Clone 1; the balance Clone BDX317.

The vineyard is planted to more or less North-South orientation and to row spacing of 2.8m and plant spacing of 2.4m. The Dillons Point sub-region has slightly cooler nights in summer, even soils with high levels of available minerals, and incredible drainage due to sand from an ancient riverbed lying beneath the soil.

Vinification

A fairly typical growing season in 2013 led to an average fruit set. The ripening season saw warmer days, very little rain and very cool evenings. This allowed the essential hang time that gives us the unique flavours and intensity of Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc.

The combination of climatic factors in 2013 created wines of great concentration, but with a classic spectrum of flavour. The wines of Dillons Point have an even greater than usual depth of currant and passionfruit flavours, and are more mineral-rich than before.

The grapes were machine harvested during the night and very early morning at around 5 deg C. They were transported with haste to the winery where they were de-stemmed and pressed immediately to minimize skin contact. The racked juice was inoculated with yeast and fermented at 12 deg C for three weeks. The wine was racked, stabilized, filtered and bottled without fining.
