PRESS RELEASE: Champion Sauvignon Blanc at Air New Zealand Wine Awards

Monday 30th November

The Delta Wine Company was awarded the prestigious Label and Litho Ltd Champion Sauvignon Blanc Trophy for its 2014 Delta Hatters Hill Sauvignon Blanc at the Air New Zealand Wine Awards on Saturday night.

The Air New Zealand Wine Awards is highly regarded as New Zealand's most respected wine competition both in New Zealand and internationally. A total of 162 medals were awarded within the large Sauvignon Blanc category, and to be the winner of this trophy amongst such a fiercely contested group is an immense achievement for The Delta Wine Company.

Established in 2000 by friends and colleagues Matt Thomson, David Gleave (MW) and Neal Ibbotson, The Delta Wine Company originally concentrated on producing quality Pinot Noir from its Delta Vineyard in the Waihopai Valley. At the 2006 Air New Zealand Wine Awards, the 2005 Delta Vineyard Marlborough Pinot Noir was awarded the esteemed Air Sea Global Champion Pinot Noir Trophy.

With a philosophy that different grape varieties need different soil types and microclimates, the company added Sauvignon Blanc from the Dillons Point sub-region of Marlborough to its Pinot Noir offering.

The inaugural 2014 Hatters Hill Sauvignon Blanc is from a single vineyard in the Dillons Point sub-region. The wine is named after Tom Hatter, an eccentric and colourful character who lived in rural Marlborough in the early 1900s. The wine is a focussed expression of the single vineyard from which the grapes are sourced and displays intense perfume of passionfruit, fresh currants and a weighty mineral richness on the palate.

Winemaker Heather Stewart accepted the trophy on behalf of the Delta team. She comments "to be awarded the trophy for the best Sauvignon Blanc in this influential wine competition is a great achievement. This trophy is significant as it recognises our sub-regional approach to winemaking and the quality wine that it produces."

A recent partnership with Negociants New Zealand will see the Delta wines becoming increasingly available across New Zealand for the wine enthusiast.
